After years of suffering under the tyrannical rule of Mr. Jones, the malnourished and overworked animals of Manor Farm finally rise up in rebellion! With triumphant oinks, neighs, and barks, they rejoice in their newfound freedom and eagerly begin to establish a society where justice and equality reign—on a farm now renamed ‘Animal Farm’.
However, as the pigs Napoleon and Snowball quickly seize an opportunity to take control of the freshly liberated animals, the delicate balance of power starts to shift. Soon, the once-idealistic vision of equality is tainted, with power concentrating in the hands of a few.
Under the pigs’ rule, their fellow comrades are led down a dark path of turmoil, death, and despair. It doesn’t take long before the other animals realise that their dream of a utopian farm has turned into a nightmare. All animals are equal—or so they were led to believe—but some, it turns out, are more equal than others…
This compelling production, performed by a cast of 29 actors, brings together Worcester Rep, the Young Rep, and the People’s Rep, all under the direction of returning director Owen Harper (The Three Musketeers 2024). Orwell’s sharp political satire remains strikingly relevant today. His critique of those in power who manipulate democratic ideals comes to life in this chilling adaptation. The Worcester Repertory Company is proud to present this powerful retelling of a timeless classic, set to captivate audiences at the Swan Theatre this October.
