Steve Gifford’s last visit to WMSC was unforgettable, a night filled with heartfelt songs, captivating stories, and plenty of banter. This talented singer-songwriter has spent over two decades enchanting audiences across England with his original acoustic music.
Over the last 14 years, Steve has graced the stages of some of the country’s best-loved intimate venues, including The Borderline, The Musician, The Trades Club, and The Stables Theatre, where he supported Shawn Colvin on her 2007 UK tour. He’s also been a regular at major festivals like Wychwood, Weyfest (alongside Steve Harley and Dave Edmonds), Alderney Music Festival, and Folk on the Green, to name just a few. Fans often describe Steve’s music as feeling both familiar and refreshingly original, with one listener commenting, “You think you’ve heard these songs before, but at the same time, you realise they are original.”
Based in Ramsgate, Steve performs regularly in seaside towns around Thanet, charming audiences at cozy pubs and cafes where his gigs often culminate in lively dancing. His music, rooted in personal experiences and storytelling, explores themes of family, life, and nostalgia. Some of his most beloved songs, like “Knolls’ Wood” and “Boy on a Beach,” reflect his knack for weaving vivid tales through melody and lyrics.
One standout in Steve’s repertoire is the soulful “Geordie Trawler Man,” a tribute to his grandfather and his eight brothers, who worked as trawlermen in North Shields. This poignant song captures the lives of their fishwives, who smoked fish on the quayside, and draws inspiration from Steve’s walks along Blyth Harbour, where the salty air brought back vivid memories of his family’s maritime heritage.
Steve’s musical journey began in his hometown of Leighton Buzzard, where he honed his craft in local folk clubs, strumming covers of American classics and eventually crafting his own unique sound. He credits his father, a charismatic skiffle band musician, as an early influence. Since then, Steve has released six studio albums, including his most recent, “The Gods Will Decide” (2019), and continues to tour widely.
Don’t miss Steve Gifford’s return to WMSC—a chance to experience his timeless songs, engaging stories, and warm stage presence once again.
