Single cover for Emma Howett - Why Am I Like This
Why Am I Like This? by Emma Howett

1st November saw the release of “Why Am I Like This?”, the latest single from local singer/songwriter Emma Howett. Forever dubbed “Smiley Emma” by me due to her infectious, happy demeanour, Howett is both well known and much loved on the music scene in Worcester and beyond. Her high energy is transferred into each single and onto the stage when she performs live.

This latest track is said to be a “soaring anthem of self discovery wrapped in irresistible disco pop energy”. We expect nothing less of Emma! High, lilting, slow vocals bring us into the track, before the disco beat kicks in, think disco queens of days gone by, Donna Summer with “I Feel Love”, and you’ll get the vibe. As the question arises,  why am I like this?, the catchy tempo continues as the singer questions everything about herself, outwardly asking and trying to come to terms with it.

The beat is relentless and it draws you in, cleverly keeping you singing along as the song plays out. Of the track Howett says “it’s about owing your feelings and realising it’s OK to not have it all figured out. Sometimes, the journey is messy, but it’s what makes us human”.

The disco element of this track makes it a dance floor filler, vocally Emma shines with her range capabilities and lyrically we can all relate in some way. On that note, Emma has a habit of making relatable songs, lyrics that she and many others can associate with their own lives and experiences, and that’s just one of many reasons why she, and her music are loved by so many.

Currently streaming well over on Spotify, you may get the chance to hear Why Am I Like This? live very soon. Emma’s upcoming local gigs include The Craft Inn on Friday 15th and The Ale Hub Worcester on Saturday 16th November. This track will get in your head and stay there for quite some time! Fun and energetic, this track comes in at just under 4 minutes,  but as the saying goes,  time flies when you’re having fun. Go give it some love, now!
