They’re winners, baby
The ironic thing about Queens Of The Stone Age’s track ‘No One Knows’ is that everyone knows it, including your nan. The stoner rock legends are an obvious influence on PHON’s new single ‘Split The Bill’ from their forthcoming album The Current State of Affairs. Having recently changed their line-up, PHON will be launching the album at The Marr’s Bar on 1st December.
The Worcester band describe themselves as ‘heavy grunge’, and therefore it makes a lot of sense that the video for the single is shot in the vinyl paradise that is Spin The Black Circle, which I have assumed is named after the Pearl Jam song and not the Victorian boardgame.
As well as being the name of a district in northeastern Thailand, the word ‘phon’ denotes a unit of loudness. If PHON were to play in the aforementioned district, it isn’t a stretch to say that they’d be heard as far away as Cambodia. ‘Split The Bill’ is LOUD. Ollie Ridley’s vocals glide languidly above frantic drums and a fuzzy riff, though the Beck-ish slacker tone changes towards the end of the track with a howl of ‘You’re redundant, baby!’ It’s a rock ‘n’ roll standard not to care about anything, but having a job is quite helpful for being able to buy things. If you don’t buy PHON’s ‘Split The Bill’, that’ll be your Laos and theirs.
