Nothing but the Truth by The Samples
Bonus CD originally free with the Speak Truth to Power album
Original Punk was defined by the D.I.Y. aesthetic in the late 70s. Punk ideology also decreed capitalism and callous profit should play no part in the culture!
You have to admire Worcestershire’s The Samples for finally releasing their studio album, Speak Truth to Power, after all these years. Moreover, even more respect for giving away a limited number of free CDs with the album, when purchased initially. Punk. A bonus CD containing what guitarist Dave Evans labelled with characteristic modesty as “interesting”…
Nothing but the Truth is a sampler of demos, oddities, neo-tunes and outright surprises. Describing the CD as “interesting” is akin to describing Labour’s Wes Streeting as slightly right of centre.
The Samples are most defiantly left of left and unashamedly. Come to the Motherland’s lyrical sentiment is one of acceptance and self-awareness of the genuine need for workers from other countries. Refreshing. The reggae-esque versions of the tracks only add to the sardonic quality. The Drummer Jake Powell’s assured drumming proves his ability to adapt. I know one or two musicians that are defeated by the emphasis on the 2nd and 4th beat (sic). The Dub version of Motherland serves to prove The Samples desire to explore Punk’s musical history.
For those that know their musical history, Bruce Springsteen once wrote: “We learned more from a three minute record, baby, than we ever learnt at school.” Well, The Samples have done their homework. Springsteen’s “I’m on Fire” is included with the band’s up-tempo trademark signature. The Gaslight Anthem mention the song in homage in the track “The 59 Sound” and the Guana Batz covered the song back in the Psycho-billy hey-day. Now Worcestershire’s determined Punk-rockers have added the song to their oeuvre. Nice.
Clown World’s spoken word delivery explores modernity and the political landscape. In essence a musical monologue delving into how we are subjected to a façade of democracy and the reality behind the perpetuated myth. Of course, the Samples offer up their own personal take on proceedings. Not many bands quote A Clockwork Orange with such conviction…“a real life horror show.”
Viddy well, “doff your cap” to a band that refuses to play the game, a game that delayed their first studio album for far too long. Undeterred, their D.I.Y. ethic has ensured The Samples have achieved and on their terms.
However, for this generous and politically astute band it is never just about them. The inclusion of the album track Tears for Souvenirs (remix) sung in this instance by Hannah Bean of Worc’s Skewwhiff – simply highlights the band’s inclusive outlook.
Looking ahead, the Samples play Drummonds this coming Friday 11th April, in the heart of Worcester. As ever, the Samples, with Paz Smith on bass leading the way, the gig promises to deliver a fucking interesting night.
To quote Bevan, this is my truth: “I just want dance again, in the eye of a hurricane…”
