Worcester promoter Music Spoken Here continues their program of progressive, contemporary jazz at The Marr’s Bar on Thursday 27th March, with guitarist Rob Luft coming to play in the city for the first time.

Hailing from London, Rob is undeniably one of the most exciting jazz guitarists in Europe of his generation. He won the Kenny Wheeler Award after graduating from the Royal Academy of Music in 2016 and has since been nominated for a string of awards including Breakthrough Act, 2018 (Jazz FM), Instrumentalist of the Year, 2019 (Jazz FM) and Instrumentalist of the Year, 2020 (Parliamentary Jazz Awards).

Rob is a true rising star, possessing a rare combination of talent as a guitarist, band-leader, composer, and captivating communicator. He has garnered comparisons to legends such as John McLaughlin, Al Di Meola, Paco De Lucia, and Kurt Rosenwinkel. His joy in music-making, humility, and ability to connect with other musicians quickly made him one of the most sought-after instrumentalists to emerge from the UK in recent years.

With three albums in his own name and notable collaborations with Dave O’Higgins and Elina Duni, Rob has also recorded with many artists including Liane Carroll, Byron Wallen, Alice Zawadzki, Laura Jurd and bands including Enzo Zirilli’s Zirobop, the National Youth Jazz Orchestra and Scottish National Jazz Orchestra.

His highly anticipated third album “Dahab Days” was released on Edition Records in October 2023 and reveals Rob’s willingness to push boundaries and expand his sonic palette. Drawing inspiration from his time in Egypt’s Dahab region during the pandemic, he infuses the album with a unique ambiance that permeates his compositions.

This performance sees the return to Worcester of saxophonist Joe Wright and drummer Corrie Dick, who both appeared with Corrie’s six-piece ‘Sun Swells’ project in November 2023. The quartet is completed with bassist Will Sach, who has worked with Wynton Marsalis, Joe Webb and Kit Downes.

It promises to be another night of exceptional music from top British contemporary artists, the standard of which Music Spoken Here have been bringing to the city over the last three years for a growing, enthusiastic and appreciative new audience. Keen to make this experience widely accessible, admission is ‘pay what you can’ with the suggested contribution of £10-15. Alternatively, music lovers can join the Music Spoken Here Members Club, which includes free entry to their fortnightly gigs for £18 per month.
